The Empirical Research in Political Science (ERiPS) course contributes to PPPA’s goals of familiarizing students with the research methods used to study and explain political and social processes, as well as the philosophical methods of conceptual, logical, and argumentative analysis and critical evaluation.

ERiPS introduces students to foundational logics and strategies in empirical political science research, emphasizing conceptual clarity, causal explanation, and the philosophical underpinnings of research design. Students will examine key methodological approaches—descriptive, explanatory, and predictive—focusing on their epistemological assumptions, trade-offs, and real-world applications. This course builds essential reflexive and analytical competencies that prepare students for more advanced methods modules. Advanced strategies may thus be introduced in an exploratory manner, rather than for mastery.
