This course aims to give knowledge on principles of Medical Microbiology with emphasis on bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites of medical relevance. In detail, the course will describe microbial structures and virulence factors, the pathogenic mechanisms of the most important infectious diseases, the principal concepts regarding microbiological variability, diagnosis, antibiotic and antiviral therapy, the conditions promoting the rise up of infections and the prevention options (including vaccine strategies).

This knowledge will provide a solid background for comprehension of human diseases caused by pathogens as well as studying other related courses.
