This course focuses on the relationships between mankind and plants/animals, and their economic relevance.

It comprises two teaching modules: one about plants [by Piero Morandini] and one about animals [by Mattia Falaschi]; 6 ECTS (3+3)

The plant part deals with the major classes of crops, the ways humans use them (as food, feed, fiber, flower, fuel, fun and pharmaceuticals), and more generally with plants impacting on the economy, both positively and negatively (e.g. invasive species) on a global scale.
The animal part deals with the economic exploitation of wild animals; the relationships between economical processes and wildlife distribution; the assessment of the impact of animals that are harmful to humans or to ecosystems, and the activities to control or eradicate them.
